When you depress the shutter-release button, the mirror behind the lens flips out of the way to allow photons to hit the film stock. The image in the viewfinder is thus exactly what the lens sees and what will be exposed onto film. In an SLR, the image passing through the lens is reflected at a 45° angle by one mirror behind the lens pointing upward to a complicated prism behind the viewfinder.
